This New AI Predicts Your Life and Death

Researchers in Denmark have developed an artificial intelligence called “life2vec” that can predict various life events. The AI uses a similar process as ChatGPT, analyzing variables impacting life such as birth, education, social benefits, or even work schedules. The team is adapting the innovations that enabled language-processing algorithms to examine the evolution and predictability of human lives based on detailed event sequences.

Predicting Health Outcomes

The AI can predict a wide range of health or social “life-events”. It could predict health outcomes like fertility or obesity, or even who will get cancer. The AI could also predict socioeconomic outcomes, like if you’re going to make a lot of money.

Predicting Mortality

The AI can predict life outcomes right up until the last breath. When it comes to predicting death, the algorithm is right in 78 percent of cases. The model can predict early mortality based on an eight-year period, if a person dies in the subsequent four years. The model performs better than any other algorithm that the researchers could find.

Data Privacy Concerns

The researchers insist the software is private and unavailable on the internet or to the wider research community for now. The basis for the life2vec model is the anonymized data of around six million Danes, collected by the official Statistics Denmark agency. Despite these successes, the researchers are urging caution: the data only applies to Danish people for now and thus has embedded sociodemographic bias.

A new study published in PNAS used advanced AI to examine whether male and female brains can be differentiated by analyzing brain activity patterns. The AI model, developed by Stanford researchers, identifies sex differences in brain activity with 90% accuracy.

Findings on Sex Differences

The AI found significant and consistent differences between the sexes in certain brain areas. These differences are meaningful and have implications for personalized medical approaches. The research confirms intrinsic organizational differences between sexes and links these differences to cognitive functions.

Implications for Neuropsychiatric Conditions

Sex plays an important role in brain development, aging, and the onset and progression of psychiatric and neurological disorders. For example, females are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, while conditions such as autism, ADHD, and schizophrenia are more common in males, often with sex-specific symptoms and outcomes.

Methodology and Future Directions

This study utilized spatiotemporal deep neural networks (stDNN) to distinguish sex differences within the Human Connectome Project (HCP) cohort by analyzing fMRI time series data. The use of XAI revealed that specific brain areas, particularly the default mode network, striatum, and limbic system, play crucial roles in sex differences. These findings were validated across multiple datasets and independent cohorts.
