The age of AI has made the centralized cloud model not only obsolete but also an active danger for those building on it — and for every user, too. The recently uncovered vulnerability affecting Hugging Face, a major AI-as-a-Service platform, could potentially allow tampered models uploaded by users to execute arbitrary code via their inference API feature to gain escalated control.

iPhone: AI upgrade incoming!
Microsoft has announced the 2024 versions of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, aiming to compete with Apple’s silicon-powered laptops. These new generation of Windows 11 devices are equipped with new Arm-based processors and a host of AI-based features.
Performance and Battery
Life Microsoft claims that these new devices will outperform the 15-inch MacBook Air M3 by up to 58% while lasting up to 20% longer on a single charge. The new Surface Laptop is rated for enough battery life to get you through the longest workdays, with a significant performance boost over the Surface Laptop 5.
Design and Display
The design updates to the Surface Laptop lean towards minimalism, with thinner bezels and more rounded corners. The new Surface Laptop (2024) will be sold in 13.8- and 15-inch sizes, available in Sapphire blue, a champagne-like hue Microsoft calls Dune, Platinum silver, and Black. The display includes both regular HDR and the Dolby Vision IQ standard for color and contrast, and a touchscreen.
Pricing and Availability
The 13.8-inch model starts at $1,000, while the 15-inch model will run you at least $1,300. Preorders are open now, with release dates around June 18.
China unveils weaponized robot dog with AI companion.
Robot Dogs China has showcased a pair of robot dogs, one equipped with a machine gun and the other powered by AI. These digital hounds, revealed by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), bear a strong resemblance to Boston Dynamics’s “Spot” robo-canine.
The Machine-Gun
Toting Robot Dog The larger model, weighing in at 50kg (110¼ pounds), is shown carrying a machine gun. It advances while being remotely operated by a Chinese soldier who triggers the weapon to fire. This robot dog can serve as a new member in urban combat operations, replacing soldiers to conduct reconnaissance, identify enemies, and strike the target during training.

The other robotic canine, a lightweight 15kg (30 pounds) beast, is said to have the ability to navigate a battlefield autonomously thanks to AI. It can transmit information about on-site obstacles such as wire fences, discarded tires, and tire spikes. This dog can also jump, move forward and backwards, and even lie down.
International Sentiment and Future
Considerations China’s machine-gun-toting robo-dogs are not unique, as the US military has explored the same idea. Both nations align with the current international sentiment that autonomous weapons are too dangerous to be unleashed. China’s military didn’t reveal whether its robo-dogs are considered ready for frontline action, but their use in joint military exercises with Cambodia suggests that scenario is under active consideration.

Nvidia’s shares rallied around 6% to hit a record high, leaving the AI chipmaker’s stock market value about $100 billion away from overtaking Apple. Last trading at $1,128, Nvidia’s market capitalization reached $2.8 trillion, compared to a market value of $2.9 trillion for Apple.
Nvidia’s Growth Trajectory
Nvidia’s shares have surged nearly 13% since it forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations last week and announced a stock split. The company’s shares have more than doubled so far this year after more than tripling last year.
Nvidia’s AI Boom
Nvidia, which has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom, reported a five-fold jump in revenue at its data center segment last week as customers line up for their high-performance chips. Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon.com, and other technology companies have been competing for a limited supply of Nvidia’s high-end chips as they race to dominate AI computing.
Apple’s Market Performance
Long considered a must-own stock on Wall Street, Apple has underperformed other Big Tech companies in recent months, falling around 2% this year as it struggles with weak iPhone demand and tough competition in China. Microsoft overtook Apple as the world’s most valuable company earlier this year as it raced ahead of other tech firms due to gains made by early investments in artificial intelligence across its cloud services.
