Google Maps Gets AI Lane-Smart Upgrade

Google Maps is rolling out new AI-powered navigation features to improve city driving. Starting in November, the app will highlight the correct lanes for upcoming turns and display crosswalks and road signs.

These updates aim to reduce last-minute lane changes and enhance overall driving safety.

The features will be available in 30 US metropolitan areas on both Android and iOS.

Additionally, Google Maps will now provide real-time weather updates and highlight parking options and walking directions to building entrances.

The AI Search Battle Begins

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Search, a new feature within its ChatGPT platform, to compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing, and Perplexity.

This feature offers real-time information such as sports scores, stock quotes, news, and weather, powered by partnerships with news and data providers.

Initially available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, it will roll out to Enterprise, Edu, and free users in the coming months.

This move positions OpenAI as a significant competitor in the search engine market.

Meta's Llama in China's Military

Chinese research institutions linked to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) have adapted Meta's open-source Llama AI model to create a tool for military applications.

The AI, named ChatBIT, is designed for gathering intelligence, aiding decision-making, and conducting military-oriented dialogue.

Despite Meta's restrictions against military use, enforcing these rules has proven challenging. Meta has stated that any use of their models by the PLA is unauthorized and violates their policies.

This development raises concerns about the implications of open-source AI models being repurposed for military use.
