LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Apple’s iOS 27.3 developer preview opens Siri AI to all third-party apps, letting it use personal context, on-screen awareness and multi-step “app skills.” Apps reach users in 2027.

Details:

  1. What’s new: With the iOS 27.3 update, developers can now bring Siri AI’s new features to any app. The assistant can use your personal context, understand natural language, and see what’s on screen to get things done. Before this, developers only had access to a limited set of these features.

  2. “App skills”: Developers can now combine several tasks into one action. Users also won’t need to say an app’s name when asking Siri for something.

  3. How it works in practice: In Apple’s ride-hailing example, you book a car, track it in a Live Activity, then ask Siri to change the pickup address.

  4. Apple’s own apps too: Siri AI’s expanded abilities are also coming to Calendar, Files, Mail, Maps, Messages, Notes, Photos, Safari, Weather and more. In Apple’s examples, Siri finds a coffee shop you visited last week or archives files you haven’t opened in over a year.

  5. When users get it: Developers can try it now, but the first app integrations are months away, and App Store submissions open in spring. It needs an Apple Intelligence device and a supported language, and it’s not available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS for now.

Takeaway: Siri is turning from a closed assistant into a platform any app can plug into. That puts Apple in the same race Google and OpenAI are running with their own assistant and agent tools. The real test is how many developers adopt it, and how reliably Siri handles real tasks.

Canva is restructuring 1,271 roles (22% of staff) through layoffs, role changes and relocations, as growth slows for the first time in a decade and AI reshapes design.

Details:

  1. What happened: CEO Melanie Perkins told employees that 1,271 people, or 22% of staff, will lose their jobs, change roles or move to central hubs. She called it the hardest moment in Canva’s 13-year history. She didn’t say how many of those are actual layoffs.

  2. Why: Canva is facing its first growth slowdown in a decade. The company also said new technology is changing how people create and use products. Bloomberg frames this as an AI-driven reckoning, though Canva hasn’t directly blamed AI for the cuts.

  3. The new structure: Perkins wants a simpler company built on small, empowered teams, with fewer niche specializations. Sydney will become the main home for Canva’s product teams, so some staff may need to relocate.

  4. Severance package: Affected staff get at least six months’ salary, 12 months of healthcare and career support. The one-year vesting cliff is removed for recent hires. Departing employees keep their laptops and can apply for $10,000 grants to start new ventures.

  5. What’s next: A company-wide meeting is set for November 10 to discuss the changes.

Takeaway: Even AI-forward software leaders aren’t safe. As AI lets people do more without specialist tools, companies like Canva and Atlassian are cutting staff and reorganizing around leaner teams. Canva’s generous exit package stands out, but the message is clear: the design-software business is being reshaped fast.

SpaceX quietly cut Grok Bot usage limits, maxing out users’ weekly caps overnight. Musk says serving costs were too high versus revenue, and new limits haven’t been shared yet.

Details:

  1. What happened: Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users found their weekly usage limits maxed out, even without using the agentic AI overnight. Some saw usage jump from as low as 50% to 100%.

  2. Musk confirms it’s deliberate: Replying to a user on X, Musk said this wasn’t a glitch: the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue. He hasn’t addressed it on his main feed, where he’s still promoting Grok Bot.

  3. Why it’s surprising: Grok Bot has been a success story for newly public SpaceX, which said AI now makes up 52% of company income. Its “Super Intelligence” division even turned a $431 million profit, which is rare in AI. Musk recently called it the fastest-growing product he’s ever seen.

  4. What’s unclear: Musk hasn’t said how subscribers’ usage limits will work going forward.

Takeaway: Even a profitable, fast-growing AI product can’t afford unlimited use. Grok joins a growing list of AI tools tightening limits as compute costs bite. Heavy users should expect stricter caps or higher prices across the industry, and changes that land with little warning.
