LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

OpenAI made its Decisions API available to all. It’s a fast, cheap AI that picks between options in milliseconds, a direct challenge to TypeSafe’s Jev in the hot new “decision model” race.
Details
What it is: Decision models act like super-fast classifiers. Give them a set of options and they pick one in milliseconds with a confidence score. Developers are using them in place of large language models for many tasks because they’re far quicker and cheaper.
The rival: The category took off with TypeSafe’s Jev model. TypeSafe, founded by a former OpenAI researcher, is now valued at $7.6 billion.
OpenAI’s version: OpenAI didn’t build a new model. It reworked ChatGPT Luna to run much faster, cutting response times from 1–3 seconds to around 100–180 milliseconds. Announced at its September 29 dev day, it became available to all customers on Thursday, with new voice and image support.
Early results: Box, Datadog, Ramp and Speak tested it. Speak, an AI language tutor, cut the time between actions from 1.4 seconds to 0.13 seconds.
How it stacks up: On public benchmarks, OpenAI’s model ranks 8th and 14th, behind Liquid’s D1 Ultra, Base Lab’s Elephant-1 and Jev. Jev is still the most-used decision model on OpenRouter, but OpenAI says its model is stronger with images.
Takeaway: The next AI battle isn’t about smarter models. It’s about faster and cheaper ones. As AI decisions drop to milliseconds, expect tons of new uses, like analyzing every frame of a video in real time.

Microsoft’s AI Diagnostic Orchestrator solved 83% of complex medical cases vs 22–36% for doctors, per a study in Science. Microsoft calls it a step toward “medical superintelligence.”
Details
The study: Microsoft’s AI diagnostic system, MAI-DxO, correctly diagnosed about 83% of complex cases in a peer-reviewed study published October 22 in Science. Generalist doctors scored between 22% and 36%.
How it works: It acts like a virtual panel of doctors. Several AI agents question the patient, decide which tests to order and debate each other before agreeing on a diagnosis.
Emergency room test: On real ER cases from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the AI hit 80% accuracy versus 47% for human doctors.
What’s next: Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says the company is working with Mayo Clinic to build a healthcare foundation model, planned for release next year.
The caveats: It has only been tested on past cases, not real patients, and Suleyman admits it still needs clinical validation. All 15 of the study’s authors work at Microsoft.
Takeaway: AI is getting genuinely good at the hardest part of medicine: figuring out what’s wrong. But beating doctors on old case files is very different from treating real patients, so real-world trials will be the true test.

Bill Gates told The Verge’s Decoder that AI is the most dangerous technology ever invented. Even in the best case, he says, we face 20 tumultuous years before an era of abundance.
Details
The warning: In a long interview with Nilay Patel, Gates said AI has now crossed a threshold that makes it the most dangerous technology ever invented. In the past year, models have learned to write code, find cyber flaws, reason in biology and form relationships with kids.
The 20-year transition: Gates says there will be a roughly 20-year period of winners, losers and major disruption before society reaches an era of abundance. He expects serious job market and cyberattack harms within 2–3 years.
The biggest near-term risk: AI models with their safeguards stripped out, especially open-weight models, which could be used for cyberattacks and bioterrorism. For Gates, the issue isn’t which lab is better but whether safeguards exist at all.
What he wants: Governments should set technical standards and require mandatory reviews of AI, like they do for cars and planes. He doesn’t think self-regulation or current White House policy is enough.
Not a doomer: Gates insists he’s not a doomer. He even suggests “human-reserved” jobs like childcare, cooking, art and sports, where society might choose to limit AI even if machines could do them better.
Takeaway: One of tech’s biggest optimists has become one of AI’s loudest alarm-ringers. His message isn’t “stop AI,” it’s that the transition will be rough no matter what, so the rules we set now decide how much damage we take along the way.
