LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

OpenAI now caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts can use one device or payment card. It targets users juggling cheap subscriptions and nudges them toward buying more expensive extra credits.

Details

  1. The new limits: Users who link too many subscriptions to one payment card or device can’t start new ones. ChatGPT also caps paid accounts per device, and when you hit the limit, you’ll see “Device limit reached” and that account can’t be used on that device.

  2. Who’s affected: The limits apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don’t count. Logging out of an account doesn’t automatically free up a spot.

  3. The target: It mainly hits power users who switch between several cheap paid accounts on one device to get more usage out of flat-rate plans.

  4. The push to pay more: OpenAI instead points users to buying extra credits or usage resets, which generally cost more than another subscription. The Decoder says it’s another sign OpenAI is starting to put revenue ahead of growth.

Takeaway: The era of “all-you-can-prompt” AI is ending. As heavy users strain capacity, OpenAI is closing loopholes and moving toward pay-for-what-you-use pricing.

DeepSeek released an open-source prototype of Super-Agent, a proactive coding agent that watches team chats and GitHub and handles requests on its own, as it races Anthropic and plans an IPO.

Details

  1. What it is: DeepSeek published a prototype of Super-Agent, an open-source autonomous coding agent built to keep pace with rivals like Anthropic’s Claude. It was built by DeepSeek’s Harness team, which focuses on AI agents.

  2. How it works: It listens to GitHub and, optionally, the Feishu team chat app. When an approved teammate asks for help, it opens a task, works on it in its own session and replies in the original conversation, for example with a pull request.

  3. Built to save attention: Its core idea is to take as little human attention as possible while delivering as much value as possible. It only acts when asked or when team rules allow, and a web panel shows what needs a human.

  4. Just a prototype: DeepSeek says it’s research code, not an official product, and may contain bugs. Much of it was built by coding agents, and some ideas from DeepSeek’s design paper aren’t implemented yet.

  5. The bigger picture: DeepSeek reportedly raised about $15 billion in late October from investors including Tencent and CATL, one of China’s largest private rounds, and could file for an IPO by the end of this year or early 2027.

Takeaway: The AI race is shifting from chatbots to agents that work like teammates. DeepSeek is betting that giving away a proactive coding agent for free will help it catch up with Anthropic, especially as both head toward the stock market.

Elon Musk says xAI’s Grok Bot costs more to run than it brings in, calling the model unsustainable, as X Premium users complain about hitting their usage limits much faster than usual.

Details

  1. What Musk said: Replying to an X user who asked for a Grok Bot limit reset, Musk said the cost of running the AI assistant is too high compared with what it currently earns.

  2. The user complaints: Many X Premium subscribers say they’ve been burning through their Grok Bot quotas unusually fast over the past week.

  3. Why it’s expensive: Grok Bot needs heavy computing power and costly servers to handle complex tasks and its X integration. With an estimated 800,000 paying users, subscription revenue isn’t covering the bill, so xAI appears to be using stricter caps to control costs.

  4. What’s next: It’s unclear whether xAI will raise prices, change quotas or upgrade its infrastructure to cut costs. Until then, heavy users may keep running into limits.

Takeaway: Even the richest AI players are hitting the same wall: powerful agents are expensive to run. From Grok to ChatGPT, the cheap all-you-can-use AI subscription is starting to look unsustainable.
