LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

After subscriber backlash, OpenAI canceled a planned 50% usage cut for its $200 ChatGPT Pro plan and doubled Work and Codex limits across Pro tiers and Business Premium. Prices stay the same.

Details

  1. The reversal: At DevDay on September 29, OpenAI said Pro 200 usage would drop from 20x the Plus allowance to 10x starting October 30, at the same $200/month price. On October 29, a day before it took effect, OpenAI canceled the cut.

  2. The announcement: Codex lead Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux posted on X that OpenAI is doubling usage limits for all Pro 100, 200 and 500 tiers and Business Premium, effective immediately, adding that the company “heard your kind feedback.”

  3. What actually doubles: The boost applies to the shared ChatGPT Work and Codex allowance. Pro 200 users keep their higher allowance, and those on the lower one get bumped up to match. Weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limits stay unchanged.

  4. What stays the same: Prices remain $100, $200 and $500 a month, and ChatGPT Plus is unchanged. Business Premium also gets more usage, but OpenAI hasn’t said exactly how much.

  5. The catch: OpenAI doesn’t publish exact usage numbers for any tier, so subscribers can’t check the doubling against an official figure.

Takeaway: Power users pushed back, and OpenAI blinked. With Codex and AI agents eating through usage fast, generous limits are becoming a key battleground for keeping paying customers loyal.

Microsoft’s buyout offer to 60,000 staff is the clearest sign yet AI will shrink its workforce. And the company says the offer doesn’t replace layoffs, which will continue.

Details

  1. A clear signal: The Verge calls the offer the clearest sign yet that AI will fundamentally change the size of Microsoft’s workforce, following what CEO Satya Nadella has been saying for the past couple of years.

  2. Layoffs aren’t over: Microsoft told GeekWire the exit offer isn’t a replacement for layoffs, which remain part of its approach depending on business conditions.

  3. What’s on offer: Pay based on tenure and level, continued stock vesting, health coverage for a set period and career transition help. There’s no minimum age or tenure, and performance isn’t a factor. Teams decide whether to take part.

  4. A pattern of cuts: Microsoft cut about 15,000 jobs in 2025, about 4,800 more in July 2026 and additional roles in September, all while pouring billions into AI data centers.

  5. The bill comes later: Decisions are due in December, so the cost will show up in Microsoft’s late-January earnings, not this week’s results.

Takeaway: Voluntary exits are the soft opening. Microsoft is telling employees, investors and the industry that its AI future will be built with fewer people, and that more cuts could follow.

The Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, slides, spreadsheets and code directly in a chat, no downloading needed. It’s free for all users.

Details

  1. What’s new: Announced October 29, Gemini can now create, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and more without leaving the conversation.

  2. How it works: Files open full screen. You can type changes yourself, highlight a section and ask Gemini to rewrite it, or ask follow-up questions. For example, highlight a table and say “show this as a graph instead.”

  3. What’s different: Since April, Gemini could already generate files, but you had to download them and open another app to make changes. Now the editing happens right in the chat.

  4. Where it works: PDF editing works on both web and mobile. Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code are web-only for now. Files can be saved to Drive or exported, with slides downloadable as PPTX or PDF.

  5. Availability: It’s rolling out to all Gemini users, free and paid, in every language where the app is available.

Takeaway: AI chatbots are turning into full workspaces. With Gemini, ChatGPT and Apple all adding document editing inside AI tools, the line between “chatbot” and “office suite” is disappearing fast.
