TikTok Faces New Heat

The European Union's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act has entered a crucial phase with the enforcement of its initial prohibitions on specific AI practices, effective from February 2, 2025.

This marks a significant step in the EU's risk-based approach to AI regulation, categorizing AI systems based on their potential impact on fundamental rights and safety.

The now-prohibited practices include AI systems designed for subliminal manipulation, exploitation of vulnerabilities, social scoring, and real-time remote biometric identification in public spaces (with limited exceptions for law enforcement under strict safeguards).

These prohibitions aim to protect individuals from harmful AI applications and uphold fundamental rights.

DOGE's AI Agenda: Efficiency or Overreach?

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk under the Trump administration, is facing widespread protests for its controversial approach to integrating AI into government operations.

Dubbed the "Hands Off" protests, over 1,400 events globally have criticized DOGE's policies, which aim to streamline government functions by replacing human roles with AI systems.

DOGE's initiatives include identifying wasteful spending, reducing the federal workforce, and centralizing government data for AI-driven decision-making.

Critics argue that these measures prioritize cost-cutting over public service effectiveness, undermining democratic processes and increasing surveillance risks.
