Google’s Gemini family of AI models has a new addition: Gemini 1.5 Flash. This model is optimized for speed and efficiency, making it ideal for high-volume, real-time tasks. Despite its lighter weight, it retains impressive multimodal reasoning capabilities and features a breakthrough long context window.
Applications and Capabilities
Gemini 1.5 Flash excels at summarization, chat applications, image and video captioning, and data extraction from lengthy documents and tables. It achieves this by leveraging knowledge distilled from its larger counterpart, Gemini 1.5 Pro, through a process called "distillation".

Meta, the company behind Instagram, is introducing a new feature that allows U.S. Instagram users to create custom AI chatbot characters. These chatbots can respond to messages and engage in live conversations. The feature is part of Meta’s AI Studio, which empowers creators and small businesses to design their own personalized chatbot avatars.
Testing with Creators
Currently, the feature is being tested with around 50 creators, but Meta plans to gradually roll it out to a broader user base by the end of July or August. This move reflects the growing interest in chatbots and AI-driven interactions across various platforms.

OpenAI’s InstructGPT models represent a significant advancement in aligning language models with user intentions. These models are trained using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), a technique that involves demonstrations of desired behavior and ranking model-generated outputs. By fine-tuning GPT-3 with this approach, InstructGPT models exhibit improved instruction-following capabilities, reduced fabrication of facts, and decreased toxic output generation.
Enhancing Safety Without Compromising Capabilities
Despite having over 100x fewer parameters than a larger GPT-3 model, InstructGPT performs favorably in academic natural language processing (NLP) evaluations. OpenAI demonstrates that safety improvements need not come at the expense of model capabilities. By incorporating human feedback, they achieve a better alignment between language models and user intentions.
