Gemini AI on More Android Phones

Google Gemini, the AI-powered assistant, is making its way to more Android phones through the Google Messages app. Now, users with compatible devices can chat with Gemini just like they would with any other chatbot, such as ChatGPT.

What You Can Do with Gemini

Within your messages app, you can draft messages, brainstorm ideas, and ask questions about anything and everything using Gemini. Previously, this feature was limited to select smartphones like Google Pixel 6, 7, and 8, as well as Samsung Galaxy S22 and later devices. However, these restrictions have been eased, and any Android device running the latest version of Google Messages (with at least 6GB of RAM and RCS messages turned on) can now access Gemini.

A Few Requirements

To use Gemini, ensure that you meet a few criteria:

  • Log into Messages using a personal account (not managed by Family Link or a Google Workspace account).

  • Be 18 years or older.

  • Live in a country where the feature is available.

  • Set your phone’s language to English (French works in Canada too).

Remember that while chatting with Gemini, your RCS chats are not encrypted, and like all AI, it may occasionally provide inaccurate information.

Blood test for early Parkinson's detection? 🩸

Researchers have developed an AI-enhanced blood test that can predict who will develop Parkinson’s disease up to seven years before symptoms arise. This breakthrough could significantly improve research into treatments that slow or prevent the disease.

Signature Pattern of Blood Proteins

To create the test, scientists at UCL and the University of Gƶttingen used a machine learning algorithm to identify a signature pattern of eight blood proteins in patients with Parkinson’s. The algorithm then successfully predicted future Parkinson’s cases in other patients based on blood samples.

Potential Impact

If validated in a broad population, this blood test could be made available within two years, using existing equipment found in many NHS laboratories. While there are currently no drugs to protect the brain from Parkinson’s, an accurate predictive test would help identify individuals who could benefit most from clinical trials of potential treatments.

DeepMind's AI: Soundscapes & Dialogue for Videos

DeepMind, Google’s AI research lab, has been working on a technology called V2A (short for ā€œvideo-to-audioā€), which aims to generate soundtracks and dialogue for videos. While existing video-generating AI models can create visuals, they often lack synchronized sound effects. V2A bridges this gap by automatically generating music, sound effects, and even dialogue that match the video content.

How V2A Works

DeepMind’s V2A technology combines video descriptions (e.g., ā€œjellyfish pulsating underwater, marine life, oceanā€) with the actual video footage to create audio elements. It uses a diffusion model trained on a diverse dataset that includes sounds, dialogue transcripts, and video clips. By associating specific audio events with visual scenes, V2A enhances the overall viewing experience.

Unique Features and Challenges

Unlike other sound-generating tools, V2A can understand raw video pixels and automatically sync generated sounds with the video, even without textual descriptions. However, it’s not flawless—audio quality may suffer in certain cases, and the generated sounds can be somewhat stereotypical. To prevent misuse, DeepMind currently has no plans to release V2A publicly, but it continues to gather feedback from creators and filmmakers to refine the technology.
