Elon Musk vs. OpenAI’s Big Change

Encode, a nonprofit organization, has joined Elon Musk's legal effort to prevent OpenAI from transitioning to a for-profit entity.

Encode argues that this shift would undermine OpenAI's mission to develop safe and beneficial AI technology.

The nonprofit has requested to file an amicus brief in support of Musk's injunction, emphasizing the need for AI to be controlled by a public charity rather than a profit-driven organization.

Meta also supports this effort, highlighting potential negative impacts on Silicon Valley.

AI's Impact on the US Power Grid

AI data centers are causing power distortions in the US, according to a Bloomberg report.

Using data from over one million residential sensors, the report found that households near data centers experience "bad harmonics," leading to potential damage to appliances, increased fire risk, and power outages.

The fluctuating energy demands of AI data centers exacerbate these issues, challenging grid stability. However, some utility companies question the accuracy of these findings.

USB-C Is Now Law in the EU

Starting December 28, 2024, the EU mandates USB-C as the common charging standard for most electronic devices, aiming to reduce e-waste and simplify consumer life.

This directive covers mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, and more, but excludes laptops until April 2026.

The regulation also promotes fast charging standardization and unbundling chargers from devices, potentially saving consumers up to €250 million annually and reducing e-waste by 11,000 tonnes each year.
