Elon Musk’s AI Grok Spreads Fake News on X
A shocking story was promoted on the “front page” or main feed of Elon Musk’s X on Thursday: “Iran Strikes Tel Aviv with Heavy Missiles,” read the headline. This would certainly be a worrying world news development. However, there was one major problem: Iran did not attack Israel. The headline was fake. The fake headline was apparently generated by X’s own official AI chatbot, Grok, and then promoted by X’s trending news product, Explore.
The Role of Human Editors in Trending Topics
A few years before Elon Musk acquired the platform then-known as Twitter, the company rolled out a new feature that provided written context for trending topics. The technology powering the written trend descriptions? Humans. In 2020, Twitter put together a team of human editors to curate news and put trends in context. Shortly after Musk bought the company in October 2022, though, the written context on trending topics disappeared. Musk had laid off Twitter’s human editors.
X’s Updated Explore Page
Earlier this week, some X fan accounts like @XDaily shared screenshots of X’s upcoming Explore page relaunch. X’s Explore page includes the platform’s infamous trending topics list along with specific section breakouts like “News” and “Sports” to provide users with trending stories in each particular subject category. Musk’s updated Explore page looked poised to bring back the written context provided to trending topics and stories.

AI DeepFakes
How to detect AI deepfakes
AI-generated images are being used in various harmful ways, such as creating nonconsensual pornography, spreading misinformation during elections, and promoting products using celebrity impersonations. The quality of some fake images is so good that they’re nearly impossible to distinguish from real ones. In a notable case, a finance manager at a Hong Kong bank wired about $25.6 million to fraudsters who used AI to pose as the worker’s bosses on a video call.
Efforts to Combat Deepfakes
A growing group of researchers, academics, and start-up founders are working on ways to track and label AI content. They are forming alliances with news organizations, Big Tech companies, and even camera manufacturers, hoping to prevent AI images from further eroding the public’s ability to understand what’s true and what isn’t.
Watermarking AI Images
Digital watermarks have been used for years by record labels and movie studios to protect their content from being pirated. Now, they’ve become one of the most popular ideas to help deal with a wave of AI-generated images. Some companies already put visible labels on images made by their AI generators. However, the industry is focusing more on unseen watermarks that are baked into the image itself. These are not visible to the human eye but could be detected by, say, a social media platform, which would then label them before viewers see them.
AI Updates
Gemini: Major Changes on the Horizon
Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot may soon see significant changes, including reply features with Gmail on Android and a new subscription model. Google is allegedly pondering the idea of a slew of new AI features for use in Google Search that may be added to the company’s current premium subscription services.
Premium Features and Subscription Model
The Google One AI premium membership gives users access to certain AI features built by Google, including 2TB of storage and a version of the Gemini assistant for Gmail and Docs. Different ideas are still being thrown around internally at Google.
Partnership with Apple
Recent reports revealed that Google may soon release Gemini-powered reply suggestions in the Android Gmail app. Bloomberg reported in March that Apple is looking to partner with Google for a massive deal that would allow iPhone users to leverage the unique features of Gemini. The outlet said Apple is hoping to license Gemini and leverage the AI through new iOS updates later this year.
Google’s AI Future
Google has expressed interest in artificial intelligence incorporation within a variety of products. Logan Kilpatrick, who served as OpenAI’s former head of developer relations until March, announced on Tuesday that he would lead Google’s AI Studio and help iterate on Gemini.

Hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb compared artificial intelligence (AI) to the Industrial Revolution, stating that AI is driving a transformational technology platform shift similar to those seen roughly once per decade. He mentioned the personal computer in the 1980s, the internet in the 1990s, mobile in the 2000s, and the cloud in the 2010s. This puts investors in front of a big opportunity.
Investing in AI Stocks
The most prudent way to benefit from this opportunity is to own a basket of AI stocks1. While many investors will naturally gravitate toward Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), the company whose chips power the most advanced AI systems, ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW) is a more compelling AI stock at its current price.
Nvidia: The Gold Standard in AI
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) are the gold standard in accelerating complex data center workloads like artificial intelligence (AI). The company consistently achieves record-breaking results at the MLPerfs, objective benchmarks that measure the performance of AI hardware and software. Nvidia delivered an astounding financial performance in the fourth quarter.
ServiceNow: A Compelling AI Stock
ServiceNow specializes in digital workflow management. Its platform addresses four primary use cases: technology workflows like IT service, employee workflows like human resources, customer workflows like customer service, and creator workflows like application development and workflow automation. ServiceNow is the market leader in IT service management, IT operations management, and artificial intelligence (AI) for IT operations software, according to consultancy Gartner.
