LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

In its updated IPO filing, Anthropic warned it may soon hit its own threshold for AI that dramatically speeds up its own development, a step toward recursive self-improvement (RSI).
Details
What RSI is: Recursive self-improvement is when AI gets so good at improving itself that capabilities accelerate dramatically. Optimists see a huge productivity and science boom. Doomers fear AI that grows beyond human control.
The warning: In new risk factors in its revised S-1 filing, Anthropic said its internal estimates for future models suggest it may soon meet its Responsible Scaling Policy’s definition of “dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI.”
A surprising admission: Anthropic said it has, in the past, failed to spot a significant jump in its development speed until after it happened, and may miss one again. Using AI to build AI could outpace its ability to put safety measures in place.
No threshold crossed yet: Anthropic says none of its current models have passed this line. It doesn’t expect to safely let Claude fully design future models without meaningful human oversight, and it’s considering updating its safety policy to keep humans in control.
The skeptics: Critics note that an IPO filing is part disclosure, part marketing, and claims of near self-building AI could serve both purposes.
Takeaway: Self-improving AI is moving from science fiction into legal disclosures. Whether it’s a real warning or IPO hype, it puts pressure on regulators and labs to decide how much AI should help build the next AI.

Google’s Project Suncatcher satellite ran its Gemma 4 model on a data-center-class TPU in orbit and sent back a haiku about space, an early step toward solar-powered AI data centers in space.
Details
The milestone: Google says its Project Suncatcher prototype sent back “the first-ever AI response from a data center class TPU in orbit.” The onboard chip ran Google’s Gemma 4 open model and wrote a short space-themed haiku.
The satellite: Built with Planet and launched October 1 on a SpaceX Falcon 9, it carries four of Google’s Trillium TPUs. After about three weeks of setup, the first prompt was answered as the satellite passed over Svalbard, Norway.
The limits: Solar power is so limited that only one chip can run at a time, for about 20 minutes. This is a survival test, not a working data center.
What’s being tested: Over about a year, Google will study how the chips handle extreme heat and cold and radiation, which can silently corrupt data, without Earth-style cooling.
The big goal: Space-based solar panels can be up to 8x more productive than on Earth. If the test works, Google plans two more satellites in 2027 with more power and laser links, eventually aiming for constellations of satellites working as one data center.
Takeaway: AI’s biggest bottleneck is now electricity, not chips. Google’s haiku from space is small, but it’s a real first step toward moving AI computing off Earth to tap nearly endless solar power.

DeepSeek added Creator Mode to its open-source DeepSeek Harness agent app, letting users build working plugins, from 3D visualizers to video editors, just by describing them in plain English.
Details
What’s new: DeepSeek launched Creator Mode on November 2 for DeepSeek Harness, its open-source AI agent platform. Users describe what they want in plain English, and the agent builds an installable plugin.
What you can build: DeepSeek showed off a design workspace, a sandbox game, a 3D AI model visualizer, 3D model rendering and a video editing workbench. In one demo, it built and installed a floating Pomodoro timer in about 5.5 minutes from a one-line request.
How it works: Harness is built so that “everything is a plugin,” including tools, skills and parts of the interface. Creator Mode lets the agent write, test and install those plugins itself.
Safety warning: Plugins are real code, and Harness is still an experimental developer preview. DeepSeek recommends running it in a disposable virtual machine, keeping backups and reviewing plugins before they run.
The bigger race: It comes just days after DeepSeek released its Super-Agent coding prototype. Its Harness team was formed this year to compete with AI coding tools from US rivals like Anthropic.
Takeaway: The agent race is shifting from AI that uses tools to AI that builds tools for you. DeepSeek is betting that letting users invent their own features will help its open-source platform catch up with US rivals.
