Google: Chrome Users Still Tracked

  1. Zero-Day Vulnerability: Google has released an emergency security update for Chrome to address the fifth zero-day vulnerability discovered in the browser this year. This particular vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-5217, is already being exploited by hackers.

  2. Severity and Exploitation: The flaw results from a heap buffer overflow weakness in the VP8 encoding within libvpx. It can lead to app crashes or arbitrary code execution. Notably, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) found that this zero-day was exploited by hackers to install spyware.

  3. Immediate Update Needed: While the emergency update may take days or weeks to roll out to all Chrome users, I recommend checking for updates manually. The latest version (117.0.5938.132) contains critical security fixes.
