LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

ChatGPT now lets you lock chats with a PIN, Face ID or Touch ID, hiding them from anyone using your device. It’s rolling out to all plans, but it doesn’t add encryption.

Details

  1. What it does: OpenAI announced on Tuesday that you can now lock individual ChatGPT conversations with a 4-digit PIN, Face ID or Touch ID. It’s built for personal chats or surprise planning when you hand your phone to someone.

  2. How it works: Locked chats move to a separate “Locked Chats” section, hidden from regular history and search. With Memory on, they get their own memory, so details from them don’t show up in your normal chats.

  3. What it doesn’t do: Locking doesn’t add end-to-end encryption, change how long OpenAI keeps the data, or opt you out of model training. It only controls who can see the chat on your device.

  4. Watch out: If you reset your PIN, all locked chats and files are permanently deleted.

  5. Availability: It’s rolling out to Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users, but not ChatGPT for Healthcare. It doesn’t work on temporary, archived, group or shared-link chats.

Takeaway: People now share their most personal thoughts with ChatGPT, and OpenAI is treating those chats more like a private diary. Just remember: this hides chats from people around you, not from OpenAI.

Google is rolling out Gemini’s Personal Intelligence to Android Auto. It pulls from your Gmail, Calendar, Photos and Maps to give personal answers while you drive. Built-in cars get it later.

Details

  1. What’s new: Google started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto on October 20. Gemini itself is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in.

  2. How it works: It connects to Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. You can ask about flight details, appointments or saved places without picking up your phone.

  3. Privacy: It’s opt-in, and you can turn it off anytime in Gemini settings. In cars with Google built-in, personal answers only work when your phone is connected.

  4. Who gets it: Personal Google accounts for users 18+ only. It excludes Workspace business and school accounts, plus the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria.

  5. Timeline: Android Auto is rolling out now. Cars with Google built-in will get it in the next few months.

Takeaway: Your car is becoming your personal assistant. Gemini knowing your schedule and inbox means fewer reasons to touch your phone while driving, but it also means trusting Google with even more of your personal data.

Perplexity’s AI agent Computer can now run fully on Apple silicon Macs, working across your files, Notes, Mail and Messages without sending personal data to the cloud.

Details

  1. What’s new: Perplexity launched a fully local mode for Computer on Oct 20. The AI model, planning and task execution all run on your Mac.

  2. How it works: It runs on Qwen 3.6 or PPLX Pro, Perplexity’s own tuned version of Qwen. With your permission, it can work across local files and apps like Notes, Messages, Mail and Numbers.

  3. Two modes: Fully local keeps everything on your device. Hybrid Compute, launched last month, mixes cloud reasoning with local file processing. You can also allow it to reach the cloud when it needs current info or 15+ frontier models.

  4. Real use cases: It can review a private investment portfolio, draft a client proposal from confidential notes, or scan your Mail and Messages to build a morning to-do list.

  5. Availability: It’s available now for Perplexity Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers on Apple silicon Macs. Perplexity recommends 36GB of memory or more.

Takeaway: Powerful AI agents no longer have to live in the cloud. Running locally means more privacy and lower credit costs, but you’ll need a high-end Mac to get the most out of it.
