Sweden’s Government Offices are blocking ChatGPT and Claude on staff computers from Monday over data security concerns. Microsoft Copilot is the only AI tool that passed review.
Details
The ban: Sweden’s Government Offices, which support the prime minister and cabinet, will block ChatGPT and Claude on staff computers starting Monday. Civil servants will be directed to Microsoft Copilot as the only approved AI tool.
Why: Digitalisation director Mikael Wettercrantz said using AI services without a formal contract risks information security. He cited cases where staff entered sensitive information and mishandled AI-generated answers.
Why Copilot passed: The government reviewed Copilot and tightened its security settings under a formal agreement, which it hadn’t done for ChatGPT or Claude. Without a contract, user queries go to outside company servers, and US law can force those companies to hand over data.
A wider trend: Sweden’s Tax Agency and another national agency already banned consumer AI tools, and more agencies are considering it. The European Parliament went further in February, disabling ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot on all work devices.
The twist: Microsoft added Claude models into Copilot earlier this year. Sweden hasn’t said whether Claude is switched on in its Copilot, so the line between “banned” and “approved” AI isn’t as clear as it looks.
Takeaway: For governments, the question isn’t which AI is smartest. It’s which one comes with a signed security contract. Enterprise deals, not model quality, are deciding who wins in the public sector.

Google’s new privacy policy lets Gmail, Photos and Drive data shape your ads if you connect them to its AI features. Google says ads won’t come directly from your inbox, but you can opt out.
Details
What changed: Google has long promised not to use your email content for ads. Its updated policy adds an exception: your data can influence ads if you connect Gmail, Drive or Photos to other Google services through AI features like Personal Intelligence.
What stays protected: Google still won’t target ads based on sensitive categories like race, religion, sexual orientation or health, and won’t share your name or email with advertisers unless you ask.
Google’s response: Google told Ars Technica that ads won’t be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library, even when they’re connected to its AI tools. Advertisers also don’t get direct access to your content.
How to check Gmail: Go to Settings, then See All Settings. Under General, open Manage Workspace smart feature settings and review “Smart features in other Google products.”
How to check Search: In your Google Account, go to Data & privacy, then Personalization settings, then Connected Content apps. You can disconnect Workspace and Photos, or turn off Personalized Recommendations entirely.
Takeaway: Google isn’t suddenly reading every email to sell you ads, but its old “never” now has an AI-shaped exception. If you use Gemini’s personal features, take two minutes to decide what you’re willing to share.

CapCut announced a ChatGPT plugin at CapCut World LA that lets you turn ideas into videos inside ChatGPT, then refine them in CapCut’s web editor. An open beta is expected in November.
Details
The announcement: CapCut revealed its new ChatGPT plugin on stage at CapCut World in Los Angeles. It brings CapCut’s video editing and generation tools directly into ChatGPT.
How it works: Start with an idea in ChatGPT, create a draft video with the CapCut plugin inside the chat, then move it to CapCut’s web editor to polish, share and publish.
OpenAI’s take: OpenAI product lead Sam Yam said the goal is to make editing easier so creators can spend more time on the creative decisions that make their work unique.
Timeline: It’s “coming soon,” with an open beta reportedly planned for November.
Why it matters: CapCut already has 660 million+ users. Putting its tools inside ChatGPT could reach millions of new users and help it compete with Meta’s Edits app, which has been gaining ground with Reels creators.
Takeaway: ChatGPT is turning into a creative studio, not just a chatbot. For creators, the workflow from idea to finished video is collapsing into a single conversation.
