Bitcoin Miners vs AI: The Battle for Energy in Data Centers
Bitcoin miners are increasingly facing off against a new foe ahead of this week’s halving: the AI boom. Analysts at investment firm AllianceBernstein, Gautam Chhugani and Mahika Sapra, said that miners are now competing with AI data centers in places like Texas.
The Energy Debate: Bitcoin Mining vs AI
The energy consumption of Bitcoin mining and AI has been a topic of debate. Hive Digital Technologies, a firm with its feet planted in both industries, believes that concerns about AI’s energy use will prove just as overblown for the former as it did for the latter.
Bitcoin Mining Council on Energy Consumption
The Bitcoin Mining Council claims that 56% of the electricity behind Bitcoin comes from “sustainable” sources. However, there’s reason to be skeptical about this claim.
The Future of Energy Consumption in Tech
As the tech industry continues to evolve, the battle for energy between Bitcoin miners and AI is likely to intensify. The outcome of this battle could have significant implications for the future of both industries.

Apple’s Focus on On-Device AI
Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 is expected to bring a significant shift towards on-device artificial intelligence (AI). The initial wave of Apple’s AI features will work entirely on the device, eliminating the need for cloud processing. This approach offers benefits such as improved speed and privacy.
Drawbacks of On-Device AI
However, the on-device strategy also has its drawbacks. For instance, on-device AI features wouldn’t be able to access higher-power cloud infrastructure that can run more sophisticated AI algorithms.
Device Compatibility
There’s also the question of device compatibility for AI features powered on-device. While cloud-based AI features can run on older devices with slower hardware, on-device features could be limited to only the newest iPhones with the latest A-series chips.
Partnership with Google
Apple is expected to announce many of its own AI features, while simultaneously teaming up with a company like Google for cloud-based artificial intelligence features.
New AI Features in the Works
Rumors suggest that iOS 18 will include new AI features such as a ‘Safari browsing assistant’ and new AI coding and testing features in Xcode. The iPhone 16 Pro’s new A18 Pro chip is also expected to offer powerful on-device AI performance.
Release Date
iOS 18 is likely to be announced at WWDC 2024, which will take place during the first or second week of June.

Airchat: Talk, Not Text
Airchat, a new social media app, encourages users to "just talk". The app is the brainchild of Naval Ravikant, founder of AngelList, and former Tinder product executive Brian Norgard. The team had released a previous version of Airchat last year, but they have now rebuilt and relaunched it on iOS and Android.
Unique Features of Airchat
Unlike traditional social media apps, Airchat’s posts and replies are audio recordings, which the app then transcribes. When you open Airchat, messages automatically start playing, and you can quickly cycle through them by swiping up and down. Users also have the option to pause the audio and read the text, and they can share photos and videos.
The Vision Behind Airchat
Ravikant believes that the natural voice can foster better human connection, transforming the dynamic compared to text-based social apps. He argues that "online text-only media has given us this delusion that people can’t get along, but actually everybody can get along”.
User Experience and Reception
Airchat’s asynchronous, threaded posts offer a different experience than the live chat rooms that were popular on platforms like Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces. This approach removes the stage fright barrier to participating, as users can take their time to compose a message. Early users of Airchat have been found to be mostly introverted and shy.
Current Status and Future Plans
Currently, Airchat is invite-only and is already ranked #27 in social networking on Apple’s App Store1. Most of the current posts are about the app itself, with Ravikant and Norgard answering questions and soliciting feedback. The team is looking forward to seeing how users adapt to this new form of social media and how it will evolve over time.

Billionaires Shift from Nvidia to Amazon and Palantir
Several Wall Street billionaires, including Israel Englander at Millennium Management and Steven Cohen at Point72 Asset Management, have reduced their stakes in Nvidia. Englander sold 1.7 million shares of Nvidia, reducing his stake by 45%, while Cohen sold 1.1 million shares, reducing his stake by 66%.
Investing in Amazon and Palantir
In place of Nvidia, these billionaires have purchased shares of Amazon and Palantir Technologies. Both of these stocks have seen significant growth, with Amazon and Palantir stocks soaring 84% and 170%, respectively, over the past year.
Amazon’s AI Innovations
Amazon is a leader in e-commerce, advertising, and cloud computing. Innovations like Bedrock and Amazon Q should help the company monetize artificial intelligence.
Palantir’s AI Platform
Palantir’s CEO, Alex Karp, says its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) product is drawing new customers and driving revenue growth for the company.
The Future of AI Investments
The shift from hardware-focused AI investments (like Nvidia) to software and cloud services (like Amazon and Palantir) could be a new trend in AI investments. This shift could have significant implications for the future of the AI industry.
