Apple researchers have revealed a significant AI breakthrough that could make Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, much smarter. In a new paper titled ‘ReALM: Reference Resolution As Language Modeling’, the researchers explain how Apple’s AI system will aim to consider both the content on your device’s screen and the tasks you are currently performing. This is intended to help Siri understand the context of your requests by knowing what image is on screen, what music is playing in the background, or which iPhone alarm just sounded.
Outperforming GPT-4
Apple researchers claim that their AI is able to “substantially” outperform GPT-4, the large language model (LLM) that drives the paid-for ChatGPT Plus, for this particular “reference resolution” task. This suggests that Siri could finally shake its reputation as a sub-par digital assistant.
Competition in AI
It’s not just Apple making strides in AI. Samsung’s Bixby, which has an even worse reputation than Siri, is apparently on the cusp of gaining its own generative AI features. This indicates that whether you’re an iOS or Android user, there’s good news on the horizon for AI chatbots embedded in your phone.
The Future of Siri
If the researchers’ technology were to make it into Siri, it could mark a huge step up for Apple’s much-maligned assistant. Interestingly, Apple says its largest LLM is the one that substantially outclasses GPT-4 for this ‘reference resolution’ task1. Yet even the company’s smallest LLM achieved “performance comparable to that of GPT-4.” This indicates that Apple’s AI research has produced some impressive results.

Scientists at Eli Lilly have been using generative AI to search through millions of molecules. The AI can generate as many molecules in five minutes as Lilly could synthesize in an entire year in traditional wet labs. The top AI-generated biological designs, molecules that were described as having “weird-looking structures” that could not be matched to much in the company’s existing molecular database, but that looked like potentially strong drug candidates, were taken to Lilly research scientists. The scientists were expected to point out everything wrong with the AI-generated designs, but instead, they found the designs interesting and acknowledged that they hadn’t thought about designing a molecule in that way.
