LATEST AI UPDATES

71% of Leaders Favor AI Skills Over Experience

A recent survey by Microsoft and LinkedIn reveals a significant shift in hiring preferences, with 71% of leaders favoring candidates with AI skills over those with relevant industry experience.

Survey Insights: The 2024 Annual Work Trend Index surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries. The findings highlight a growing demand for AI expertise, providing opportunities for entry-level professionals and posing challenges for those with traditional experience.

Employer-Employee Gap: Despite the preference for AI skills, only 25% of employers plan to provide generative AI training this year. Many knowledge workers are taking upskilling into their own hands, with 75% now using AI at work to save time and boost creativity.

Leadership Concerns: While 79% of leaders believe AI is essential for competitiveness, 59% are concerned about measuring productivity gains, and 60% worry about their organization’s lack of a clear AI implementation plan.

Impact on Job Market: The shift towards AI skills is reshaping the job market, with 46% of professionals considering quitting their current roles. This trend underscores the need for continuous learning and adaptability in the workforce.

Android 15: Here, But Not Yet

Google has officially launched Android 15, introducing a range of new features aimed at improving user experience across smartphones, tablets, and Wear OS watches.

Circle to Search: The new “Circle to Search” feature allows users to search for songs by making gestures like circling, highlighting, or tapping on their screens. This eliminates the need for third-party apps like Shazam, making music identification more seamless.

Enhanced Earthquake Alerts: Android’s Earthquake Alert System, which uses smartphone sensors to detect tremors, is now available across all U.S. states and territories. This system provides early warnings for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, helping users prepare for potential disasters.

Accessibility Improvements: Android 15 includes significant accessibility enhancements, such as “TalkBack” for detailed audio descriptions of images and “Listen to this page” for text-to-speech functionality in Chrome. These features support multiple languages, including English, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, and Spanish.

Offline Maps for Wear OS: Wear OS users can now access offline maps, allowing them to navigate without their phones. This feature is particularly useful for those who find themselves without cell service or who prefer to leave their phones behind.

Musk's xAI Supercomputer Online with 100K GPUs

Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled its new supercomputer, Colossus, which features an impressive 100,000 Nvidia GPUs. This development marks a significant milestone in AI training capabilities.

Rapid Assembly: The supercomputer was assembled in just four months, a remarkable feat considering the scale of the project. Musk announced that the facility, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is now online.

Technical Specifications: Colossus utilizes Nvidia’s H100 GPUs, known for their high performance in AI model training. The GPUs are valued at around $30,000 each, indicating a substantial investment in the project.

Future Expansion: xAI plans to double the capacity of Colossus to 200,000 GPUs in the coming months. This expansion will include 50,000 Nvidia H200 GPUs, which offer upgraded memory and faster data transfer capabilities.

Environmental and Local Impact: The launch of Colossus has raised concerns about its environmental impact, particularly regarding electricity consumption and potential air pollution. xAI has pledged to support local infrastructure improvements to mitigate these issues.
