European Union Endorses World’s First Major Act to Regulate AI

The European Union’s parliament approved the world’s first major set of regulatory ground rules to govern artificial intelligence. The EU AI Act, born in 2021, categorizes the technology into levels of risk, ranging from “unacceptable” to high, medium, and low hazard.

Voting Details

The act was endorsed in the Parliament’s session with 523 votes in favor, 46 against, and 49 votes not cast. The European commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton, hailed Europe as a global standard-setter in AI.

Implementation and Impact

The regulation is expected to enter into force at the end of the legislature in May, after passing final checks and receiving endorsement from the European Council. Implementation will then be staggered from 2025 onward.
