The first film written by AI has arrived
The Last Screenwriter is a groundbreaking 2024 film that defies convention. Written entirely by artificial intelligence, it challenges the traditional boundaries of storytelling. Swiss filmmaker Peter Luisi directed this experimental project, which showcases the capabilities of ChatGPT, an online chatbot developed by OpenAI.
The AI-Generated Script
Every line of dialogue in The Last Screenwriter emerged from ChatGPT’s digital imagination. The AI wrote the screenplay over four days, prompted by a mere 17-word input. Despite its unconventional origin, the film follows a familiar format, with costumes, actors, and scenes brought to life by human collaborators.
A Controversial Debut
Scheduled for a private screening at London’s Prince Charles Cinema on June 16, 2024, the film faced backlash from cinema patrons who expressed concerns about "the use of AI in place of a writer". Nevertheless, The Last Screenwriter marks a significant milestone in the intersection of AI and creativity, sparking both curiosity and controversy.
AI Takeover: Sooner Than you Think
Dean Meadowcroft, a former copywriter, never thought AI would replace him. However, when his company introduced an AI system last year, it streamlined the writing process significantly. What used to take human copywriters 60 to 90 minutes, the AI accomplished in just 10 minutes or less. Eventually, Dean’s team was laid off, and he realized that AI had indeed replaced them.
The Goldman Sachs Report
Earlier this year, a report from Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could potentially replace 300 million full-time jobs globally. However, job losses won’t be evenly distributed across all sectors. Administrative and legal professions face higher risks (46% and 44% of tasks, respectively), while construction and maintenance have lower automation potential (6% and 4%).
AI’s Dual Impact
While AI may displace certain jobs, it can also create new opportunities. For instance, IKEA retrained call center workers as design advisers, handling customer calls alongside an AI system. Balancing job displacement with productivity gains remains a challenge, but AI’s transformative impact is undeniable.
Apple's AI Run: Hurdles in China
Apple’s ambitious venture, Apple Intelligence, aims to bring artificial intelligence (AI) across its devices. However, there has been little discussion about how the Cupertino giant plans to introduce this technology in China.
China’s Stringent Rules on AI
Navigating China’s regulatory environment poses significant challenges for Apple. Beijing has enacted strict rules related to data protection and large language models (LLMs), which are essential for AI applications like ChatGPT. These rules require LLM providers to obtain approval for commercial use, and generative AI providers must take down “illegal” content.
Uncertainty Surrounding Apple Intelligence in China
Several factors contribute to the uncertainty:
Apple’s language model, which powers features of Apple Intelligence, would likely need approval from Chinese authorities.
Siri’s integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT is problematic since ChatGPT is banned in China. Finding an equivalent domestic partner becomes crucial.
While Apple faces hurdles, successfully navigating China’s AI landscape will impact its global growth strategy and technological innovation.
