AI vs. Journalism

A coalition of Canadian news and media companies, including the Toronto Star, CBC, and the Globe and Mail, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.

They allege that OpenAI has infringed their copyrights by using content scraped from their websites to train its AI models, including ChatGPT. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and an injunction to prevent OpenAI from using their content without permission.

OpenAI, which has faced similar lawsuits from other media companies, maintains that its use of publicly available data is grounded in fair use and international copyright principles.

AI Outperform Doctors😲

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reveals that ChatGPT, an AI language model, outperformed doctors in diagnostic accuracy.

The study involved 50 practicing physicians and found that while AI did not significantly improve clinical reasoning when used as an aid, it performed better than doctors when used independently.

This raises questions about the future role of AI in healthcare and the need for effective prompt engineering to maximize AI's potential.

Black Friday Shoppers Break $10.8B Record

This year's Black Friday online sales reached a record $10.8 billion, according to Adobe Analytics. This figure is more than double the $5 billion spent in 2017.

The surge in spending was driven by deep discounts on toys, which saw a 622% increase in sales compared to an average day earlier this fall.

Other popular categories included jewelry, appliances, apparel, and electronics. Notably, more than half of all online sales were made on mobile devices.

Overall, online retail sales rose by 14.6% compared to last year, while in-store sales saw only a modest increase of 0.7%.
