Mass General Brigham built an AI that estimates biological age and predicts cancer survival from one face photo. It’s low-cost and promising, but more research is needed before clinical use.
Details
The study: Researchers at Mass General Brigham published the work in The Lancet Digital Health.
How it works: The base model, FAHR-Face, was trained on over 40 million facial images. It was then fine-tuned into two tools.
Two tools: FAHR-FaceAge estimates how old you look biologically. FAHR-FaceSurvival predicts survival directly from a photo, and was trained on 34,389 photos of cancer patients.
A first: Co-senior author Hugo Aerts says this is the first time an AI has predicted cancer survival directly from a simple photo.
Results: In the preprint, patients in the highest-risk group had more than triple the death rate of the lowest-risk group. Used together, the two tools predicted outcomes more accurately.
Lifestyle signals: Heavy drinking, drug use and smoking were linked to looking biologically older.
Why it matters: It could help doctors judge whether a patient is fit for intensive treatments like surgery, radiation or chemo.
Caveat: Doctors say more research is needed before it’s widely used.
Takeaway: Your face may become a “digital vital sign.” A cheap selfie could someday help doctors make life-or-death treatment decisions, but it also raises big privacy questions about who gets to read your health from your face.

Amazon blocks AI agents like Meta’s Muse from shopping on its site. Walmart is embracing them, and Bank of America says that could make Walmart the winner in AI-led shopping.
Details
BofA’s view: In a note published Monday, Bank of America analysts said Walmart is well positioned for AI agent shopping.
Walmart’s approach: It works with multiple AI platforms, has its own assistant called “Sparky,” and partners with Meta’s Muse. Best Buy and Ulta also partner with Muse.
Amazon’s approach: It blocks Muse from buying on its site and bans other automated shopping tools, partly to keep another tech platform from becoming the middleman.
Why it matters now: Most people use AI to research products, not to buy them yet. Walmart wants to get in early while shopping habits are still forming.
The risk: If AI agents do the checkout instead of people, it’s unclear what happens to retail advertising, which matters more and more to Walmart.
Takeaway: Retailers have to choose: control the customer, like Amazon, or meet them wherever AI takes them, like Walmart. Whoever guesses right could shape the next era of online shopping.

Yelp’s Fall release adds 30+ features: OpenTable booking in Yelp Assistant, an AI agent that calls restaurants to check wait times, and a $30/mo AI that qualifies leads for businesses.
Details
Smarter Yelp Assistant: You can now book OpenTable reservations and join waitlists right in the chat. It covers 500,000+ restaurants through OpenTable, Yelp, DoorDash and Grubhub.
More personal: A new “Keep Me Posted” feature sends scheduled picks, like date-night ideas every Wednesday. Suggestions now draw on your chat and review history, and factor in real-time weather.
Check for Me: An AI phone agent calls the restaurant for you and texts you the wait time within minutes. It’s coming to the U.S. on iOS in the coming months.
Home services: You can book plumbers, electricians and others in the chat, or request quotes for up to 5 projects at once.
My Lists: Save and rank places as “Been Here” or “Want to Go,” share them, and get weekly personalized picks.
For businesses, Smart Lead Reply: An AI agent that replies to customers, collects job details and qualifies leads. It launches next month for $30/month.
Integrations and ads: New tie-ins with ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber and Workiz, plus ads personalized by what users searched on Yelp.
Takeaway: Yelp is turning from a review site into an AI agent that acts for you, making calls, booking tables and chasing leads. Local search is moving from “find it” to “get it done.”
