LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees, roughly 27% of its workforce, as it cuts costs to fund massive AI spending. Takers leave December 31.

Details

  1. The offer: Microsoft confirmed it’s offering voluntary exit packages to about 60,000 employees at the vice president level and below in the US, Canada, India and the UK. That’s about 27% of its 223,000-person workforce.

  2. Who’s eligible: Teams including Xbox, Windows, Copilot, AI experiences, Finance and HR. Some groups, like sales, marketing and data center staff, are excluded.

  3. The terms: The package is similar to Microsoft’s standard severance. Employees must decide by early December, and those who accept will leave on December 31.

  4. Why now: Microsoft is spending hundreds of billions on AI data centers and chips and needs to control costs elsewhere. Its headcount has barely changed since 2022, and it reports quarterly earnings this week.

  5. Second round this year: Earlier this year, Microsoft offered retirement-age buyouts to about 8,750 US workers, and over 30% accepted. It expects fewer people to take this new offer.

Takeaway: Big Tech is paying for AI partly by shrinking its human workforce. Voluntary buyouts are the gentle version, but the message is clear: the money is moving from people to data centers.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, cheaper model built for computer use and everyday work. It matches GPT-6 Astra on key tests at one-tenth the token price and runs 3x faster.

Details

  1. What it is: GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI’s new mid-tier model, sitting between Luna and Sol/Astra. It’s built for everyday computer work: reading screens, filling out forms, entering invoices, editing videos and drafting proposals.

  2. Cheaper and faster: API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, 50% lower than the GPT-5.6 Terra it replaces. OpenAI says it completes tasks over 3x faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

  3. Big performance jump: It scored 15 points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra on Agents’ Last Exam at about a third of the cost, and matched GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token. On coding, it solved 50.3% of Terminal-Bench 4.0 tasks, more than double its predecessor’s 21.5%.

  4. Fewer mistakes: Artificial Analysis found its hallucination rate dropped from 88% to 38%. OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for the hardest coding work.

  5. Safety and availability: It reaches OpenAI’s “Critical” cybersecurity level and uses the same safeguards as GPT-6 Astra. It’s rolling out now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and via the API as gpt-6.1-terra.

Takeaway: The real AI race is now about price, not just power. When near-flagship intelligence costs a tenth as much, AI agents doing everyday office work become cheap enough for every business to use.

iOS 27.2 is out. Siri AI can now remember past chats, pull from more personal info and speak 5 new languages. It also adds hidden watermarks to AI-generated images.

Details

  1. Siri remembers: Siri AI can now recall past conversations, so you can ask about something it told you before, like restaurants it recommended last week. It also draws from more sources, including photos in Messages, Calendar attendees, voicemails and Safari history.

  2. New languages: Siri AI now supports French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It’s still not available in the EU or mainland China, and Apple says more languages are coming later this year.

  3. More privacy control: A new “Excluded Apps” setting lets you choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access, all in one place.

  4. AI watermarks: Images created or edited with Apple’s AI tools in Photos and Image Playground now carry SynthID watermarks, making it easier to tell if an image was AI-generated.

  5. Other updates: Messages can now suggest actions from your chats, like adding a dinner to your Calendar. The Apple TV app gets household profiles, and Apple Music gets a new icon. Siri AI features require iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

Takeaway: Apple’s Siri is finally acting like a real AI assistant, one that remembers you and understands your personal context. The new privacy controls and AI watermarks show Apple trying to catch up on AI without giving up its privacy-first image.
