LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

The Dutch government plans to cut 25,000 civil service jobs, over 15% of its workforce, saving €3.5B a year by 2035. AI is meant to take on more of the work.

Details

  1. The plan: The Netherlands announced it will cut 25,000 civil servant jobs over several years. That’s more than 15% of its civil service, one of the most aggressive moves by any government to adapt to AI.

  2. The savings: It aims to save €900 million a year by 2027, rising to €3.5 billion a year from 2035. The cabinet will present plans for using AI in government early next year.

  3. Who’s hit: Police and defense are exempt. Ministries, inspectorates and implementing agencies face the biggest cuts, with some departments losing 45% to 60% of staff.

  4. The AI angle: The minister cited parliamentary motions calling for a 20% productivity boost through AI. Various AI projects already exist across government, and the goal is to use AI much more widely, alongside cutting red tape.

  5. Not alone: New Zealand is considering similar cuts using a targeted AI approach. For scale, an equivalent cut in the US would mean about 150,000 jobs.

Takeaway: Governments are starting to bet that AI can run the state with far fewer people. The Netherlands is now the test case. If it works, expect other countries to follow fast, and if it doesn’t, public services could take the hit.

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon, its most powerful model, ranked #1 on the Artificial Analysis Index. It leads in cybersecurity and long tasks, and goes first to cyber defenders only.

Details

  1. The model: Gemini 4 Carbon is Google’s new frontier model, launched just two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon. It scores 59 on the updated Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, ranking #1.

  2. Cybersecurity leader: It sets state-of-the-art scores for finding vulnerabilities (88.2% on SEC-bench Pro), testing whether they can be exploited (54.8% on ExploitGym) and fixing them (71.0% on CWE-bench). Google’s Chrome team says it produced patches over 10x better than another lab’s frontier model.

  3. Built for long tasks: Google says Carbon can work for days on complex engineering problems, like tracking down and fixing subtle bugs across huge codebases.

  4. Safer behavior: Successful cheating on a key coding benchmark dropped to 0%, unsupported claims were cut about in half versus Argon, and it blocked 100% of prompt injection attacks in one benchmark.

  5. Careful rollout: Because of its cyber power, it’s going first to a small group of cyber defenders, then trusted partners, with wider access for developers and consumers “as soon as possible.” Introductory pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, later rising to $4 and $20.

Takeaway: AI models are now powerful enough at hacking that companies are holding them back from the public. Google is betting the best defense is giving these tools to the defenders first.

Chrome’s enhanced autofill now uses Gemini to pull order numbers, tracking info and flight bookings from your Gmail to fill online forms. Google Photos support is coming soon.

Details

  1. What’s new: Chrome’s enhanced autofill can now suggest details pulled directly from your Gmail inbox, like order numbers, tracking info and flight bookings, as you fill out online forms.

  2. How it works: When you start filling a form, Chrome shows its usual autofill menu plus a new “Suggested by Gemini” option after checking your inbox. Each suggestion shows its source, and you can remove it.

  3. Coming next: Google says autofill will soon be able to pull information from images in your Google Photos library.

  4. Who gets it: It’s rolling out in the US on desktop, Android and iOS for Gemini in Chrome users aged 18+ who have Personal Intelligence turned on. It’s not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.

  5. How to turn it off: Go to Chrome Settings, then Autofill and passwords, then Enhanced autofill, and switch off “Find and fill with Gemini.” To stop Gemini reading Gmail entirely, disconnect Gmail under Connected Apps in Gemini settings.

Takeaway: No more digging through your inbox for a booking code. But it’s another sign that Personal Intelligence is spreading across every Google product, so it’s worth deciding how much of your inbox you want AI to see.
