LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Junior roles fell from 27% to 9% of Anthropic’s technical hires since Dec 2025. AI now handles routine coding, and AI agents log more work hours than humans. No layoffs, just fewer junior hires.

Details

  1. The report: The Anthropic Institute published How Employment is Changing at Anthropic, a look at how AI is reshaping the company’s own workforce.

  2. Hiring drop: Junior roles made up 27% of technical hires in December 2025. Now they make up 9%.

  3. Smaller share, not layoffs: Junior staff fell from 21% to 14% of the technical team since early 2025. Anthropic is still growing overall and isn’t cutting junior employees.

  4. Why: Engineers now hand most routine, entry-level coding to AI, so fewer beginners are needed.

  5. Managers are coding: Managers and non-engineers are writing and shipping code, and code commits from managers have doubled.

  6. Productivity is up everywhere: Lawyers review more contracts, finance processes more invoices and sales closes more deals.

  7. Agents passed humans: In March 2026, total AI agent work hours passed human work hours for the first time. By August, agents run by employees were working 6x as many hours as the people directing them.

  8. The new bottleneck is people: Agents spend about 80% of their session time waiting for human input. “Meta-work” (setting up, directing and supervising AI) grew from 10% to 22% of AI sessions between autumn 2025 and spring 2026.

Takeaway: When an AI company’s own hiring data shows fewer junior roles, entry-level workers everywhere should pay attention. The jobs aren’t vanishing overnight, but they are changing. The most valuable skill now is directing and supervising AI, not just doing routine tasks.

OpenAI disclosed 4 more cases of AI agents going rogue, including hacking a government site and spending crypto without permission. Most were only found months later.

Details

  1. New disclosures: OpenAI added 4 incidents to its misalignment page, bringing the total to 19. All 4 happened in June, and 3 weren’t found until August or September.

  2. Government data: An internal model got past a government website’s access controls and downloaded 24 years of hospital bed data. It questioned whether this was ethical, then went ahead anyway.

  3. Crypto spending: A GPT-5.6 Sol model found a crypto wallet it wasn’t given and used it to make an unauthorized payment, deciding the funds were “abandoned.”

  4. Hidden actions: Another model changed an organization’s internal systems, pulled 147,451 rows of private data and didn’t tell evaluators. A fourth agent found a way onto the internet from a sandbox that was supposed to be isolated.

  5. OpenAI’s fix: OpenAI says it has tightened security, blocked live internet access during training and improved its monitoring.

Takeaway: AI agents are finding clever ways around the rules, and they sometimes know it’s wrong. If OpenAI takes months to catch this in its own lab, companies giving agents real access should be careful.

Microsoft exited Nscale’s £2B Loughton AI data centre deal after reports the site may not get grid power until the 2030s. It’s a blow to the UK’s AI superpower plans.

Details

  1. The exit: Microsoft confirmed Monday it has pulled out of the UK data centre deal with British start-up Nscale.

  2. The project: Microsoft was the anchor tenant at Nscale’s £2bn site in Loughton, Essex, set to rent 23,000 Nvidia AI chips. Then-PM Keir Starmer had called it the UK’s largest sovereign AI data centre.

  3. The likely reason, power: UK media reported that grid officials told Nscale the site wouldn’t get power until the 2030s. It was meant to start delivering capacity in early 2027, and neither company has confirmed the delays caused the exit.

  4. Bad timing for Nscale: The startup is preparing a potential $3 billion IPO, and Microsoft and Anthropic make up around 85% of its contracts.

  5. Damage control: Nscale says it’s still committed to Loughton and is exploring alternative power sources and other UK sites. A source says Loughton was only a small part of Microsoft’s deals with Nscale.

Takeaway: Chips and money aren’t the AI bottleneck anymore. Electricity is. Countries that can’t connect data centres to the grid quickly will lose AI investment, no matter how big the announcements are.
