Amazon now runs 1M+ warehouse robots. Experts warn they work right beside its 1.5M humans and set the pace, raising injury risks and weakening workers’ leverage.
Details
New milestone: Amazon’s warehouse fleet has passed 1 million robots, including robotic arms, Roomba-style floor movers and large pallet sorters.
Why Amazon wants them: The robots speed up deliveries and cut overhead across its logistics network.
The workforce: More than 1.5 million full- and part-time employees now share facilities with this fleet.
What’s different: George Mason University professor Brad Greenwood told Ars Technica that past automation moved risky tasks away from people. Amazon’s robots work in the same space as humans and control how fast work happens.
Less worker power: When machines set the pace, Amazon needs less human labor. Critics say that weakens individual workers and any union bargaining.
Safety concerns: Reports suggest injuries rise as more robots arrive on the floor. Joan Moriarty of the union coalition Strategic Organizing Center says the robot hype distracts from the tens of thousands of Amazon workers hurt each year.
Takeaway: Automation isn’t only replacing jobs. It’s changing the jobs that remain. When robots set the speed, humans have to keep up, and the cost can show up in safety and job security long before layoffs do.

Sam Altman confirms OpenAI will build a humanoid robot. A demo is planned for 2027, but he says building the AI “brain” is harder than building the body. No product or price yet.
Details
Confirmed: On the Sources podcast, Altman was asked whether OpenAI will build a humanoid robot. He said yes.
Why human-shaped: Doors, keyboards and tools are made for human bodies, so a robot with a similar form can work in those same spaces.
The real challenge: Altman says the “brain” matters more than what the robot looks like. It has to see, understand instructions, plan, move and fix its own mistakes, like gripping a mug without spilling it.
Timeline: Altman told Fortune to expect a “cool demo” in 2027. He said robots walking the streets are still a few years further out.
Hardware is real work too: OpenAI job listings cover custom actuators, motors, sensors, manufacturing and supply chain. There are currently 27 robotics openings.
The plan: In the short term, OpenAI wants robots that help skilled workers build infrastructure. A personal home robot is the long-term goal.
Competition: Tesla has been working on Optimus for years, and XPENG’s IRON humanoid recently walked off its own production line.
Still unknown: OpenAI hasn’t shared a design, release date, price or privacy policy for a robot with cameras and microphones in people’s homes.
Takeaway: OpenAI is betting that whoever builds the best robot brain will win the humanoid race, not whoever builds the best body. It’s a long game, though. Expect a demo in 2027, not a robot in your home anytime soon.

DeepSeek released V4.1-Flash-1017, a minor update it says is faster, more concise and better at reasoning, coding and agents. It arrives days after a 5-hour outage strained its servers.
Details
The launch: DeepSeek announced V4.1-Flash-1017 on X late Saturday (Oct 17). It’s live now on the web, the app and the developer platform.
What’s better: DeepSeek says the model scores higher on benchmarks, completes tasks faster and gives shorter answers than the previous version.
Key upgrades: Its technical report on Hugging Face points to gains in reasoning, coding, agentic tasks and visual benchmarks, plus better game creation and 3D modeling.
Benchmark: On Humanity’s Last Exam, its top score rose to 42.6, up from 39.1 for the earlier V4.1-Flash.
Minor update: DeepSeek calls this a small update to V4.1-Flash, which launched in early September.
Price pressure: V4.1-Flash launched at such a steep discount that shares of rivals MiniMax, Z.ai and Alibaba fell sharply in Hong Kong.
Growing pains: Earlier this week, DeepSeek went down for about five hours. Some experts blame limited computing power, and slowdowns have become more common as developer demand grows.
Bigger picture: The launch adds to the race between China’s open-weight models and expensive proprietary US models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Takeaway: DeepSeek keeps shipping cheap, fast and capable models at a fast pace, putting real price pressure on US and Chinese rivals. Its biggest weakness isn’t the model. It’s having enough compute to keep up with demand.
